Underpinning is a system that directly supports vertical loads from adjacent structures and supplies earth retention during excavation. Minimal vibration and sequenced construction methods are employed to provide vertical weight capacity while upholding ground support. Once new support systems have been installed, the load is transferred at either the base of the existing foundation, or applied directly to walls or columns higher in the structure through “column picks”. Underpinning is extremely specialized and involves case by case design and implementation to minimize any risk throughout each step of the construction process. Systems are designed with consideration for vertical loads imposed from the supported structure, lateral loads from retained ground, and any short-term induced loads. Drawing from our numerous techniques we securely and safely perform underpinning with thorough consideration for the ground conditions, existing structure, as well as the proposed site improvements to find the best solution for each case.
